IIIT Hyderabad invites applications for Ph.D. opportunities in the Software Engineering Research Centre (SERC). Applications are open until September 15, 2026. Review of applications will happen every two weeks, so interested candidates are highly encouraged to apply early.
Exciting Research Frontiers:
- Engineering Agentic AI Systems: Architectural approaches, Sustainable Coding/Sovereign Agents, AgentOps, evaluation frameworks, and Agentic Memory.
- Human-Centred Immersive Healthcare Experiences: HCI, Human-Centred Design, AI, VR/AR/MR/XR, wearables, and health data for personalized digital healthcare.
- Trustworthy & Accessible Digital Systems: Human-Centred AI, Design Thinking, inclusive, ethical, and privacy-aware systems promoting digital wellbeing.
- AI and Educational Technology: LLMs and Generative AI for Virtual Labs and supporting cloud infrastructure.
- Trustworthy Parallel Computing: Semantics, formal verification, model checking, controlled testing, and fuzzing under weak memory models.
- AI for Software Engineering & Theorem Proving: LLM-based translation to formal specifications, property-based testing, and ML-driven automation of proof assistants.
- Software Testing for Modern Systems & Code Smell Detection: Conformance-based interaction testing, automated test case generation, and smell detection for AI-enabled apps.
Candidate Eligibility & Prerequisites:
- Degree: B.E / B.Tech / M.E / M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) or Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE).
- Requirements: Highly motivated candidates with a strong mathematical background (particularly probability theory). Prior exposure to statistics, optimization, machine learning, formal methods, or software engineering research is an added advantage.
Evaluation & Selection Process:
Shortlisted candidates will work on an internship-style project or research problem for 3-4 months prior to the formal admission process. This provides a mutual evaluation period to assess research readiness. Formal admission is finalized via the Standing Committee route at IIIT Hyderabad.
